The Dewalt Scroll Saw and the Weekend Hobbiest

The possibilities of making wood crafts and decorations
are unlimited, when you have the right tools, and patterns.
Dewalt tools are my preference, for the simple fact that they
are dependable and they have a large variety for just about
every job imaginable.

Dewalt Saw

When it comes to making crafts and decorations the Dewalt
tool I am really impressed with is the scroll saw. This tool allows
you to cut some really detailed designs. You will need to have
a drill on hand so you can make a starter hole for inside cuts.
With this saw you can make wall hangings, clocks, decorations
to set on you mantel or entertainment center ect... Lets go over
a couple of these in more detail.

Dewalt Saw

If your wanting to make a wall hanging with your dewalt scroll
saw. First you need to decide on the pattern. This can be
something you drew up yourself or something you purchased.
Second, you need to decide what type wood you want pine, oak,
cherry, walnut, etc... to get the look you prefer. Third, place you
pattern on the surface and trace the design. After you get it
transferred, take your dewalt drill and with a small bit drill holes
in the center designs to be cut out. Now your ready for your
dewalt scroll saw. Loosen the blade adjustment and place the
blade through one of the pre-drilled pilot holes and reattach it to
the saw and set the blade tension. Make your cut. Repeat this
step until all your designs are finished. Sand it down add a little
varnish and your done. You can also glue some colored felt on
the back to really bring out the artwork.

If you want to make a clock with your dewalt scroll saw. First
you need to get a battery operated clock assembly. Your local
craft store should be able to help you with this. Transfer your
design just like with the wall hanging. But, before you drill the
pilot holes you need to add in the place for your clock fixture.
Make sure you place it in your design where it will have enough
wood to hold it solid. Make your cuts, do the finish work, add the
clock assembly and you have just made yourself a hand crafted
clock.

For making a mantle it is basically the same as the wall hanging,
just leave a flat spot on the bottom of your design. Cut out a platform
and take your dewalt router and put a contoured edge around the
top and glue your designed piece in the center. And you have a
mantle piece.

I suggest sticking with single piece designs until you get the feel
of your dewalt scroll saw. Then you can move on to multiple piece
designs that need to be glued together. But with a little practice, the
possibilities of things you can make with this dewalt tool is unlimited.

DeWalt DW718 Review - What I Think of the DeWalt DW718 Sliding Compound Miter Saw

The DeWalt DW718 is a 12-inch dual bevel sliding compound miter saw that comes equipped with a powerful 15-amp motor that operates at 3,600 RPM. The bevels are at 0 to 48 degrees which gives you better cut capacity and there's also 4 bevel stops at 0, 22.5, 33.9, and 45 degrees in both directions so that you can flip the saw instead of the material you're cutting.

The DeWalt DW718 has a very precise miter system along with a machined base fence support to allow you to make accurate cuts every time. The adjustable stainless steel detent plate is another great feature because it has 10 positive stops to give you even more accuracy and durability.

The vertical cutting capacity is also very nice with this miter saw. It miters 60 degrees to the left and 50 degrees to the right and is able to cut 3-1/2 crown vertically and 3-1/4 base vertically.

Another great aspect of this DeWalt model is the miter cam lock system. This makes the saw much easier to use and gives you a more accurate miter table positioning. There is also a tall sliding fence that supports crown molding up to 6-5/8 inches nested and base molding up to 6-1/2 inches vertically against the fence. This can be easily slid out of the way though when you need to do bevel cuts.

You're able to cut up to 2x16 dimensional lumber at 90 degrees and 2x12 inch lumber at 45 degrees with the built-in back fence design. The weight of the DeWalt DW718 is 53 pounds and although it doesn't come with a laser, you're able to easily equip one because it's compatible with the DW7187 laser system.

The DW745 - A Great Portable Table Saw by DEWALT

Whether you are a contractor who needs a portable table saw to take from job site to job site, or a hobbyist woodworker on a limited budget, you know there are a lot of portable bench top table saws to choose from. Most of them are quite good. Some are exceptional values. What makes the DW745 by DEWALT stand out in this field?

Dewalt Saw

For a contractor, one noteworthy feature is its size. It is a true portable table saw. At 45 pounds it's easy to move around. With some saws, you can't take them into tight spaces because their stands might damage stair risers or you might ding a wall when attempting to move them. Not so the DW745. It is small enough to maneuver into small areas, so you can use the saw where you are actually working.

Dewalt Saw

Its size is also a plus for the hobbyist with limited work space. You don't need a permanent space for this saw like you would for a contractor saw or a cabinet saw. You can move the car out of the garage, set up the saw, work on your project, and then at the end of the day, put the saw in a corner and put the car back in the garage.

Just because the DW745 is small doesn't mean that it doesn't have good power. It has a 15 amp, high-torque motor, giving it plenty of power to rip treated lumber and hardwoods. Coupled with a 3 1/8 inch maximum cut depth, it easily powers through 2 inch thick pieces of cherry. Ripping laminate flooring and counter tops, structural lumber, and trim molding is a snap.

It has a rather unique rack and pinion fence rail. This is what gives this relatively small saw the ability to offer 16 inches of rip. Even though this fence arrangement isn't "typical" it's still extremely accurate. The vast majority of users praise the accuracy of the fence and the fact that once set, it remains true, not creeping out of adjustment.

If there is a downside to this DEWALT, it's the miter gauge. It's made of plastic and not very accurate. If you don't make miter cuts then this won't be an issue for you. Otherwise, you might want to purchase a sturdier, more accurate after market miter gauge.

Finally, there is the cost. Depending on where you shop, you can get the DW745 for as little as 0. This is a great price for a saw that delivers performance comparable to saws costing up to five times as much. You can see why this is such a stand out saw.
